Backlink and ranking data: what to trust and what to ignore

The questions Tecrube’s backlink and ranking tools can answer, why traffic estimates mislead, and what not to do during a spam link attack.

Questions you can answer

Who links to me? Referring domains, anchor text and whether the link is followed; new and lost links are listed separately. Who links to my competitor? That is the valuable one: pulling a competitor’s profile and finding the sources you lack is the most concrete output backlink work produces.

Which of my pages attracts links? It shows which content type actually works. Who ranks for this term, and what does this domain rank for? The shortcut to reading a competitor’s content strategy.

Tecrube’s Backlink Analysis and Search Console Analysis tools answer these in the /app panel or inside Claude and ChatGPT through the MCP connector.

2

Do not trust traffic estimates

Estimated organic traffic figures from third-party tools vary widely. Compared with what you measure on your own site the gap can be several times over, and the country split can be wrong too.

The reason is simple: the estimate is calculated from rankings inside the tool’s own keyword database. Terms missing from that database never enter the maths, and click-through assumptions do not hold across industries.

The practical rule: backlink data is usable, traffic estimates are directional. Enough to say competitor A is bigger than B, not enough to say “they get forty thousand visits a month”. For your own traffic, Search Console is the only correct source.

3

What to look at in a backlink profile

Link count alone says nothing. Three things matter. Referring domain count: five hundred links from one site are worth far less than one link each from five hundred sites. Anchor text spread: if most links carry the same commercial phrase the profile looks unnatural; a healthy mix includes the brand name, bare URLs and generic phrases.

Topical relevance: links from unrelated industries carry no weight. For a dental clinic, one link from a sector directory beats a general link farm by a distance.

4

If you see a spam link attack

One day hundreds of unrelated links appear in the report. The first reflex is to build a disavow file; in most cases that is unnecessary and risky. Google has been ignoring spam links on its own for years.

Without concrete evidence of a penalty, meaning a manual action notice in Search Console and rankings that actually moved, do not upload a disavow file. A badly built one takes real, valuable links down with the junk. The right approach: save the report, watch the rankings, act if a manual action arrives.

5

What to do with the data

List the sources in the competitor’s profile that you lack and split them in three: reachable (directories, industry sites), earnable with content (data-driven articles, tools), unreachable (news sites, awards). Spend your effort on the first two.

Tecrube derives that split automatically from the competitor list and proposes an action per source. Repeat the query next month and newly gained and lost links appear side by side.

6

Reading SEO and ad data together

Bidding high on a term you already rank well for can waste budget; on a term that ranks poorly but converts well, ads are unavoidable. Because Search Console and Google Ads share one connector in Tecrube, that intersection shows up in a single table.

The first backlink and ranking analysis fits within the 75 free credits; Pro ($49) adds monthly comparison and Agency ($99) adds per-client reporting.

7

A suggestion for the monthly report

Four lines are enough for a monthly SEO report: newly gained referring domains, lost ones, the ten most valuable sources your competitor has and you lack, and ranking changes on target terms.

If you include traffic estimates, label them as directional. Keep a separate Search Console line for real traffic and clicks; mixing the two sources leads to wrong conclusions.

8

Frequently asked questions

How fresh is backlink data? Third-party indexes crawl the web constantly, but none sees everything Google sees. A new link can take days or weeks to appear in a report, so look at the monthly trend rather than short-term swings.

Isn’t the Search Console links report enough? It is a good start for your own site, but it has no competitor data and limited detail on anchor text and follow status. Using both is best: Search Console for your own profile, a backlink tool for competitor comparison.

How many links do I need? There is no numeric answer. Look at the referring domain count and topical relevance of the pages ranking first for your target term; the gap gives you a realistic goal.

Does buying links make sense? Paid links violate Google’s guidelines; once detected they carry no value and can even invite a penalty. Directing effort to the reachable sites from competitor analysis and to links earned with content is more sustainable.
