From a TikTok ad to a WhatsApp chat: setup, TikTok’s rules and measurement
Let the people who watch your video message you on WhatsApp without a stop on your website. How a TikTok-to-WhatsApp ad is set up with Tecrube, the settings TikTok will not let you change, two connection methods and how to measure the results properly.

If the sale closes on WhatsApp, the ad should go there
Dental clinics, hair salons, estate agents, car repair shops, small bakeries: in most of these businesses the customer does not order from the website, they ask first. Price, a free slot, the address are discussed on WhatsApp, and the appointment and the sale close there too. For a business like that, sending someone from TikTok to the website first adds a stop nobody needs.
Tecrube can now build a TikTok ad that removes that stop, straight from the chat: whoever taps the ad lands in a conversation opened with your WhatsApp number. This article walks through how the setup goes, which settings TikTok will not bend on, and where the results should be measured.
What the person who taps the ad sees
In the feed the ad looks like an ordinary TikTok video; the difference is the call-to-action button. The default button is “Send message”. When the person taps it, WhatsApp opens on their phone, the chat starts with your business number and the message you prepared is waiting in the text box.
All they have to do is press send. No form to fill in, no page to wait for, no contact details to look up; every step that could make someone give up is gone. In return, measurement changes too, which we cover separately below.
Setting it up with Tecrube: from the chat to a single preview
Setup starts with telling the assistant what you want: “Build a TikTok-to-WhatsApp ad for women aged 25–45 in London with the video introducing our skincare package; number +44 7700 900000, daily budget 40 pounds.” Tecrube collects the campaign name, the number, the budget, the video, the ad text (up to 100 characters) and the targeting, and asks for whatever is missing. If the video is not yet in your ad account’s library, it uploads it from a public URL; interest names are turned into TikTok targeting ids.
Give the number with its country code; a national format starting with 0 is refused, because the chat link is built from the international number. If you do not supply a cover image, the video’s own cover is taken automatically; you can also pick one of the frames TikTok suggests. The campaign, ad group and ad appear in one preview, and with your approval everything is created paused. Going live is a separate, approved step.
The settings TikTok will not let you change
With this ad type TikTok fixes some settings, and Tecrube sets them correctly for you: lead generation as the campaign objective, the instant messaging app (WhatsApp) as the ad group’s optimisation location, TikTok as the only placement, search results off. A request that tries to change these fields is turned down with the reason before anything is set up.
A few more rules apply: messaging ads cannot target people under 18, the “Call now” button is not allowed, and TikTok requires a minimum daily budget per ad group of roughly USD 20 equivalent. TikTok rejects a budget below that, and Tecrube shows the reason in the result. TikTok also does not open this objective to everyone in every market; outside Asia-Pacific and Latin America it can be limited to accounts TikTok has allowlisted.
Two ways to connect WhatsApp
Chat link (the default): Tecrube builds the wa.me link from your number itself. No extra setup is needed and the prefilled message is added to the link. With this method TikTok optimises for clicks only.
Native WhatsApp setup: if your number is connected to TikTok’s message management tool, you can choose this method. Besides clicks, optimising for conversations is possible, but TikTok only enables it for allowlisted accounts. A prefilled message is not used here; the greeting is set in TikTok’s message management tool. If you are not sure which to pick, start with the chat link; it needs no preparation at all.
The prefilled message: name the offer, not a greeting
A chat that starts with “Hi” tells you nothing about what the person wants. The prefilled message should name the offer or service in the ad: “Hi, I’d like to ask about the October discount on the skincare package.” Tecrube does not accept generic greetings on their own and asks for a text that names the offer.
If you run more than one ad, write a different prefilled message for each. The first line of an incoming chat then tells you which ad it came from; the ads dashboard cannot show this, so that small distinction is the foundation of your measurement.
The most common mistake: a link to your website
The mistake we see most often during setup is giving a web address out of habit. A messaging ad group has no website destination; an ad built around a site address is either rejected by TikTok or sends the person to a page anyway, which defeats the point of the ad.
Tecrube catches this before setup: if a landing page or website address is given, the preview does not open, the reason is stated and a phone number is requested instead. You do not need to prepare the wa.me link either; it is built from the number.
Measure the results in the right place
The TikTok report shows spend, impressions, clicks and cost per click, and Tecrube pulls them for any date range by campaign, ad group or ad. But the real outcome, the chat, the appointment and the sale, happens in WhatsApp, and TikTok cannot see it. Do not call the ad a success just because the cost per click is low.
For a few weeks, note the number of new chats every day and match them to appointments and sales; dividing spend by those numbers gives you the true cost per chat and per customer. If you have connected your WhatsApp account to Tecrube, incoming chats are listed in the inbox, and replies only go out with text you wrote or approved. Changing the budget or pausing the ad also happens from the chat with a preview and approval; these changes are written to the audit log and can be undone from the panel if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this ad without a website? Yes. This ad type goes to a chat, not to a site; what you need is a WhatsApp business number, a video and a TikTok ad account.
What is the minimum budget? TikTok requires a minimum daily budget per ad group of roughly USD 20 equivalent, applied in your account’s currency. A budget below it is rejected by TikTok.
Why can’t I choose conversation optimisation? That option only exists with the native WhatsApp setup and on accounts TikTok has allowlisted; the chat link works with click optimisation only.
How do I know which chat came from which ad? Write a separate prefilled message that names the offer for each ad; the first message of the chat shows the source.
Does the ad go live without approval? No. The campaign, ad group and ad are created paused; going live is a separate approval. The flow can be tried on 75 free credits, and the same steps work from Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor through the MCP connector.
