Photos and video on your Business Profile: why category decides everything

A photo filed under the wrong category behaves as if it was never uploaded. Cover, exterior and team shots, video limits and the three traps people fall into when uploading.

1

Category decides where a photo appears

Every image on a Google Business Profile has a category: logo, cover, exterior, interior, product, team, at work. That label determines where and when the image is shown on the profile and on the map. Upload an exterior shot as “interior” and it never appears when a customer is looking for you from the street.

The most common mistake is uploading thirty photos at once under the generic category. The photos exist, but they surface in no context; in Google's eyes the profile is still incomplete.

2

Which photos go in which category

Cover: the business at its best in one frame, landscape and uncluttered. Exterior: the sign readable, the door visible, in daylight and ideally from several angles. Interior: what the customer sees on walking in. Team: clear faces in work clothing. Product or service: at least one image per main category.

Once the Business Profile connection is set up in Tecrube, you can ask in chat to “count the profile's photos by category and list the missing categories”. The output shows how many images sit in each category and what is missing; uploads and category assignments arrive as a preview and are applied on approval.

3

Video: the space most competitors leave empty

Most local business profiles do not carry a single video. Yet a thirty-second shop tour or a moment of service says what a photo cannot and appears in its own tab on the profile. Google sets limits on duration, file size and resolution; check the current limits before uploading, because a video over the limit is rejected silently.

The rule for video is simple: portrait or landscape does not matter, keep the camera steady, clean audio is optional, and show the business within the first three seconds. Three short videos get watched more than one long one.

4

Three traps while uploading

Trap one: images covered in text and logos. Photos with promotional text overlaid can be rejected at review; upload clean photos and share the promotion as a post. Trap two: stock imagery. Google and users both tell the difference; the real place always wins.

Trap three: not checking after uploading. An image can sit in the review queue, be rejected or stay in the wrong category. Asking “list the status of recently uploaded images” a day later closes that gap. Categories can be changed afterwards; there is no need to delete and re-upload.

5

A monthly media routine

A profile should not be filled once and left. Google treats profiles with fresh imagery as more active; two or three new photos a month are enough. Update the exterior when the season changes, products when new stock arrives, the team category when the team grows. Watch customer photos as well: a removal request for an image that belongs to another business or is inappropriate is opened from the profile.

In Tecrube the routine is one prompt: “list the profile's images by category, last upload date and anything pending review”. The gaps in the output are that month's upload list. Uploads and category assignments arrive as a preview; nothing changes on the profile until you approve, and every operation is logged.

For businesses with several branches the same prompt runs across all locations; which branch is missing which category appears in one table. Rather than opening a separate panel per branch, you read the list and fill the gaps in order.

6

What media actually buys you

Correctly categorised, regularly refreshed images raise the profile's completeness score, and completeness is one component of ranking in “near me” searches. The more tangible effect is on clicks and direction requests: customers do not come to a shop they have not seen.

For advertisers there is a further link: local search ads and Performance Max can draw on the Business Profile's images. A weak profile makes the ad look weak. Because ad accounts and the Business Profile live in the same chat in Tecrube, “update the profile photos, then check the local campaign's assets” is completed in one session.
