1

Intent first, format second

Choosing a campaign type is a sequencing question, not a preference. If people already search for you, Search wins. If they do not know they need you yet, Demand Gen. If your catalogue is wide and conversion data is mature, Performance Max moves up the list.

The most common mistake in new accounts is running that sequence backwards: launching Performance Max with no conversion history means never telling the algorithm which signal to reward.

2

Search campaigns: maximum control

In Search you pick the keyword, the match type, the bid and the copy. You can see which query triggered which ad, which makes problems easy to isolate.

The price is effort. If the search terms report is not cleaned regularly, broad match spreads budget across irrelevant queries. Tecrube scans that report weekly and prepares the negative list as a preview.

For a regional HVAC service, for example, starting with Search alone for the first 30 days is the cleanest way to accumulate conversion data.

3

Performance Max: one campaign, all inventory

Performance Max serves across Search, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Display at once. You supply assets, audience signals and a goal; Google decides the mix.

Its strength is scale, its weakness is visibility. You see only a limited breakdown of spend per channel, and branded searches can drift into it unnoticed. Excluding brand terms at account level is therefore mandatory.

Accounts with fewer than 30 conversions a month rarely get Performance Max out of the learning phase; building data with Search and Shopping first is healthier.

4

Demand Gen: the demand creation side

Demand Gen places visual ads on YouTube Shorts, Discover and Gmail. The job is to introduce the product to people who are not searching yet and feed warm audiences into the Search campaign that follows.

Judging it by direct sales alone is unfair. The right yardsticks are view-through site visits, audience list growth and the rise in branded search volume.

5

App and Shopping: a short note

App campaigns target installs and in-app events and should not launch before the store link and event measurement are in place. Shopping remains the most predictable conversion source in ecommerce as long as the Merchant Center feed is healthy.

Before you launch, check in Merchant Center that no products are disapproved; a campaign launched with disapproved products spends only on the approved ones and the results mislead.

6

Building the campaign from a conversation

In Tecrube the campaign-type decision starts as a chat: you write your goal, budget and region; the system reads your conversion data, explains which type makes sense first, then produces the structure as a preview.

The preview shows campaign name, ad groups, keywords, headlines and daily budget. Nothing is written to the account before approval; once you confirm, the campaign is created paused so you get the final look.

The same flow works from Claude or ChatGPT through the MCP connector. Build your first campaign on the 75 free credits, then move to Pro for multi-campaign management.

7

Summary: the recommended order by budget

Tight budget, new account: Search only, exact and phrase match, a strict negative list. Do not move to another type until conversion data accumulates; the first goal is trustworthy measurement.

Mid budget, settled measurement: add Shopping or Performance Max next to Search and exclude brand terms. Most of the budget should still sit in the proven campaign.

Large budget, growth goal: Demand Gen creates demand while Search and Performance Max capture it. Tecrube watches the threshold at each stage and proposes the next step as a preview; when to move on is your call.

Frequently asked questions

Can Performance Max and Search run together? Yes. When a query exactly matches a keyword in your Search campaign, Search usually takes priority. Even so, excluding brand terms from Performance Max and comparing both campaigns’ search terms regularly is the safest way to keep overlap under control.

Which type should I start with on a small budget? With a limited daily budget, a single Search campaign is the most efficient start. Splitting the budget across several types stretches every learning phase and none of them produces a meaningful result.

How much creative does Demand Gen need? At least five images, one short video and five distinct headlines per ad group is a good start. Demand Gen campaigns with little creative variety fatigue quickly; Tecrube watches frequency and CTR and flags refresh timing as a preview.

Can I change the campaign type later? An existing campaign’s type cannot be changed; you build a new campaign and pause the old one. Running both side by side briefly during the switch and comparing results prevents sudden drops.
